This is our THIRD Spring Menu! Back to where it all started in 2023! We've got a nice mix of bases to choose from this time around, with a couple wild cocktails to consider as well. Let's get into it.
Gin pops up twice this time around. First with the Army and Navy, which is already a hit with those who have tried it in early testing. You'll need a bottle of orgeat for it, but that's a standard tiki element, so it will serve you well in the warmer months ahead. You'll also use gin in another favorite, the Chambord Bramble. We found this drink by searching for "how to use chambord", which is a raspberry liqueur. This is basically a boozy raspberry lemonade, and we are confident you'll be sippin it often if you try it.
On the whiskey side of things, we have a bourbon and a scotch cocktail to consider. The bourbon is in the Honey Badger. You will need Yellow Chartreuse for that, which can be hard to find. There are imitators out there to consider, but if you find a bottle, grab it! We have several other cocktails that use it on the site. The Gatsby is a very unique drink. Built in a large wine glass, this cocktail also features a common liqueur at the Runaway Anchor, Benedictine. You'll also get to dust off your Apricot Liqueur (or go grab a cheap bottle), and use saline. Saline is made by mixing salt and water (similar to how you make simple syrup with sugar). They say it "enhances the flavor". We're still on the fence about that, but watch for a YouTube video in the future to see how some side-by-side testing goes, with and without saline.
Next up are Dark Rum and Tequila. The rum is in the "Black Rumhattan". The build is the same as a regular Manhattan but you'll swap out the Rye for Dark Rum. You might also try swapping our Sweet Vermouth with Amaro, if you really want to dive deep into the "Black" part of the drink. But we dig it with just the dark rum swap. The Carajillo features an awesome blend of tequila and coffee, and uses a sweetener that we are just learning, Licor 43. If you don't have an espresso maker, you can always use coffee (or pick up a couple shots to chill from a coffee shop).
Alright the "weird cocktails" for this season are a Dry Vermouth based drink called the Chrysanthemum. We had to adjust the original recipe to balance out the vermouth and Benedictine, but in the end we found something light and tasty! The other odd duck uses a new liqueur to the Runaway Anchor, Aquavit. One of our members gifted us a bottle for Christmas and we dove into lots of experiments. The top of the pile at the moment is the Scandinavian Daquiri. Our sweetener is maple syrup paired with the daquiri staple of lime. It serves as a great transition from Winter into Spring.
Our Runaway Godfather Original Cocktail this season is the Semester Abroad. We've come to enjoy Fernet Branca in cocktails, and Anders Erickson has a great original recipe using it that we are highlighting this season. To the Bar!! (Anders' trademark phrase)
Finally, our featured mocktail this season is one of our favs for sitting out in the sun, the Blueberry Lemonade. You can buy blueberry syrup at a liquor store, but it's also easy to make. We recommend Topo Chico for the sparkling water, but you can also use Lime La Croix if you want a cheaper option.
We hope the warmth is returning to your part of the world and that you can get out in the sun, gather with friends, and make a drink or two (or more!). Cheers!!
